When Palstar bought the Command Technologies high power amplifier line, we knew that we were taking over a proud tradition of quality and performance. But, as good as they were, they represented the state of the art of an earlier time.
Palstar's engineers immediately undertook a modernization and improvement program. Palstar's Command Technologies amplifiers now incorporate a microprocessor-based controller to provide more precise T/R and electronic bias sequencing.
The amplifiers now feature true step-start, limiting in-rush current to the HV power supply and also to the tube filaments. This translates into greater reliability and tube life, since the HV rectifier, filter stack, tube filaments, and even the fuses, are not stressed on startup.
The new keying interface is now opto-isolated and fully compatible with solid-state transceivers, requiring the transceiver's keying circuit to only sink 20mA @ 5VDC.
The controller, HV power supply, and tuned input circuit boards are now fully silk-screened and solder-masked, with plug-in connections enabling them to be easily removed for repair or trade out.
New dual-scale cross-neddle metering provides continuous readouts of grid current, plate voltage and current, and relative power output without the need to switch between functions.
A 6 Meter High-Power Classic
The Commander VHF-1200 is the amplifier of choice for leading Magic Band operators around the globe. This single tube, 1200 Watt PEP, 600 Watt FM and RTTY workhorse provides the famous reliability of previous Commanders and uses the same beefy power supply as the HF-2500.
The Commander VHF-1200 is a Grounded Grid class AB2 linear power amplifier that operates on the Amateur 6 Meter band.
Over-drive and over-grid current protection is provided by an auto-reset circuit that places the amplifier in standby if a preset grid current limit is exceeded.
The VHF-1200 uses a genuine Eimac 3CPX800A7 pulse-rated external anode triode with forced air cooling and modern circuitry to insure efficient and conservative operation.
6:1 Vernier reduction drives on all tuning controls allow smooth and easy tune-up.
Rear panel input tuning controls allow a higher input circuit Q for excellent linearity and a low input VSWR across the 6 Meter band.
An automatic delay circuit for proper cathode conditioning before RF drive can be applied extends tube life. A 50 Ohm resistor in the plate supply positive lead and a 200 ohm resistor in the negative lead protect the tube in the event of an arc.
The Commander VHF-1200 features a full compliment of control and metering functions for easy on-the-air operation.
A dual primary power transformer allows 117/200/234 VAC operation.
